Kenneth Eugene Staples was born June 16, 1931 to Charles Henry Marshall and Mabelle (Clair) Staples Bonner near Ellsworth, Iowa. He attended school in Jewell, and enlisted at the age of 19 in the U.S. Army on June 27, 1950. Ken took basic training at Fort Ord, Calif. and went to engineers school at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He was first stationed in Alaska and then assigned to the 34th Engineer Combat Group at Camp Roberts, Calif. He attained the rank of Sergeant.

Ken was united in marriage to Diane Lee Daniels on April 16, 1954 in Story City. While Ken and Diane lived in the Jewell area, he farmed and worked at the beef packing plant in Fort Dodge, the turkey plant in Ellsworth, and Ames Ready Mix in Ames. In 1970, they moved to Zearing where he managed Zearing Lumber and Ready Mix, which he purchased in 1974. In 1981, Staples Lumber and Ready Mix closed, and he went to work for the Iowa Department of Transportation until his retirement in 1993.

During retirement, Ken delivered motor homes across the U.S. and Canada for Winnebago, which included two trips to Alaska. In 2008, he moved to Texas where he remained until his health failed. Ken returned to Webster City and lived at the Crestview Apartments and subsequently Crestview Manor. Ken was active in the church and many community organizations.

Ken is survived by his daughter, Tamarra (Kurt) Kulow of Hubbard; his son, Timothy (Sheryll) Staples of Jewell; his grandchildren, Prescott (Lori) Kulow of West Liberty, Aaron (Melissa) Kulow of Hampton, Ill. and Sarah (Atenogenes) Valdivia of Webster City; his sisters, Emma Lou Kerns of Apache Junction, Ariz. and Mabelle (Wayne) Romp of Stanhope; and his sister-in-law, Doris Staples of Jewell.
